What Seemed Simple

The Word:
Paul and Timothy, bond-servants of Christ Jesus. Phil. 1:1a (NASB)

The Story:
As an analytical person, I learn much about a speaker by carefully listening to an introduction. Paul uses the phrase "bondservants of Christ Jesus" to introduce himself and his mentee, Timothy in the book of Philippians. That simple phrase fascinates and perplexes me. Why would Paul, incarcerated in a Roman prison at the time he wrote this letter, introduce himself as a bondservant (a person obligated to serve without pay) rather than a prisoner? Paul looked beyond his present confinement and focused on his maker, while inspiring his mentee to do the same.

The Reflection:

In moments where the impact of my present circumstances consumes me, will I remain focused on serving my maker instead of satisfying myself? Will I stay focused during blissful moments of calm instead of forgetting him? Finally, will I serve him without expecting payment in return and inspire others that I influence to do the same?

Application:
During this week, record the best experience that you have had when someone served you.  Then, record two obstacles that hinder you from being a bondservant of Christ Jesus and how you will overcome them.

The Prayer:
God, remind us that your innocent son's death demonstrated your love for us. Help us to remember that nothing we endure can ever compare to his sacrifice, which means being your bondservant is the least that we can do.
