Making Room

by Pat Grant

The Word:
"She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said.  But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made.  She came to him and asked, 'Lord, don't you care that my sister has let me to do the work by myself? Tell her to help me. Martha, Martha the Lord answered. You are worried and upset about many things but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better and it will not be taken away from her."  (Luke 10: 39-42)

The Story:
I was married for 31 years and became a widow nine years ago. Needless to say, there were a few occasions when I found myself having a pity party because I was now home alone. When I began counting my blessings, I always felt comforted. One of my greatest blessings has been having a godly daughter who encouraged me to come to One. Coming to One gave me the opportunity to open up my home to the outreach team several times a month.

The Reflection:
Little did I know in this new season of my life that Jesus was going to wrap His loving arms around me and show me how much He cared for me. He showed me that, in spite of losing my husband, He was still going to draw me close to his heart. Like Mary, I found myself listening, learning and understanding God's Word like never before.

The Application:
When you least expect it, you will see how Jesus is working in your life through the community he has surrounded you with. The next time Christ is knocking on your heart, ask yourself these questions:
1. Am I willing to open my heart to the unknown and follow in Jesus' footsteps?
2. Would I put others first for the good of the community?
3. Is there room in my heart to increase my Christian family?
4. Am I willing to do whatever is asked of me to bring glory to our Father?

The Prayer:
Thank you Lord for opening my eyes, ears and heart. Thank you for allowing me to continue to grow in my walk with you. Please give others the courage to step out of their comfort zone.
