The Word: “As Jesus and his disciples were on their way, he came to a village where a woman named Martha opened her home to him. She had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet listening to what he said. But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made…”Martha, Martha," the Lord answered, "you are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her." Luke 10:38-42 (NIV)
The Story: As I think back on my seminary experience, I can’t say that I was fully engaged in ministry. However, now that I am at One I can say, without question or hesitation, that I am “fully engaged” in doing God’s work. Serving in ministry has placed me in the unique position of being able to “pour” into the lives of others. Each day I serve in ministry I become more aware of the responsibility and privilege I have been given.
The Reflection: To effectively participate in ministry we must place ourselves daily at the feet of Jesus, with our eyes lifted and hearts open, listening for His word to fill us. Giving the Lord our time and allowing Him to pour into us, gives us what we need to pour into those we serve.
The Application: It is so easy to get weighed down and distracted with the tasks and obligations of each day, including the work of ministry. I encourage you to remember that the work of ministry must be an act of worship, and if you have not spent time before the Lord - being filled as only He can fill – your work will be futile. This week, read at least one chapter a day from God’s Word. Make time to go before the Lord to allow Him to equip you to minister to His people.
The Prayer: Father, in all of our activity for the sake of the ministry, let us not neglect worship. Help us to be desperate for you each day and be led to your Word simply because we want to know you.
