Faithfulness

by Marcus Curry

The Word: "His master replied, 'Well done, good and faithful servant! You have been faithful with a few things; I will put you in charge of many things. Come and share your master's happiness!" Matthew 25: 21 (NIV)

"Many a man claims to have unfailing love, but a faithful man who can find?" Proverbs 20:6 (NIV)

The Story: Experience has taught me to focus on what people do rather than what they say. Our contemporary culture tends to reward style over substance, and faithfulness is something that quickly falls to the wayside. I must admit, I too struggle with faithfulness. The reality is faithfulness is revealed over time. I have learned that faithfulness shows up best in times of turmoil and discomfort, not when I'm responding to an emotional tidal wave. Faithfulness requires me to have the discipline to follow through even when I do not feel like it.  Furthermore, true faithfulness is best measured by my ability to handle small assignments that may appear to be insignificant - showing up on time, returning phone calls, or tithing.

The Reflection: The "parable of the talents" reveals that God tests our character by how we respond to small assignments. He uses these assignments to evaluate our faithfulness. God helps us to develop the skills and character we need behind the curtain before he ushers us onto center stage.

Talent is important, but the impact of my gifts is limited by how much faithfulness has been developed in my character.  Remember that the text doesn't say, "Well done, good and TALENTED servant!"  It says, "Well done, good and FAITHFUL servant!"

The Application: Consider the following questions the next time you're tempted to complain about your circumstances, or when you begin to get discouraged about not being further along in your calling.

- Is my behavior worthy of the calling on my life?
- What is my attitude toward the small and seemingly insignificant assignments and opportunities that God gives me?
- Do I value faithfulness the way God values faithfulness?
- What is God trying to teach me through the circumstances I encounter?

The Prayer: Father, forgive me for believing that certain assignments are beneath me. Thank you for taking me through the fire to develop the qualities needed to accomplish the purpose You have predestined for me. Reveal the lessons I am to learn from my current circumstances. Amen.
