The Word: The LORD is my shepherd, I shall not want. Psalm 23:1 (NASB)
The Story: My calendar is filled with appointments outlining all of my assignments and responsibilities. There are often tasks I have to complete or problems I must resolve. When I’m faced with a challenging situation, I suddenly become consumed with “doing” something to repair the situation. In Psalm 23:1, David did something that I have often overlooked. He acknowledged God as his shepherd and recognized that his needs would not go unmet. David realized he lacked nothing. He was only consumed with following his Shepherd.
The Reflection: My prideful arrogance often causes me to believe that I can live my life without the guidance of my Shepherd. When life becomes difficult and answers fail to come, I begin to rely on self and forget that My Source will not fail me when I am thirsty, tired or frustrated with waiting? When things look perilous, will I rest in the truth that I lack nothing?
The Application: During this week, spend time daily thanking God for being your Shepherd and for providing what you already have in the following areas:
- Spiritual Provision (salvation, grace, mercy, forgiveness)
- Material Provision (job, house, care, money)
- Physical Provision (health, protection, healing)
The Prayer: Lord, You are a shepherd that knows the terrain of the places I am headed and the frailties of your sheep. Thank you for choosing to lead me even when I wander. As I grow, please remind me of the importance of following You. Amen.
